The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, emerged victorious in 18 of the 23 local government areas whose results were announced at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre in Uyo on Sunday night.
Akwa Ibom State has 31 local government areas, with results from 23 LGAs declared at the time of reporting.
According to the results, Atiku dominated most parts of the state, recording victories in ONNA, Eastern Obolo, Okobo, Itu, Esit Eket, Ibeno, Ini, Nsit Atai, Oron, Etinan, Nsit Ubium, Nsit Ibom, Mkpat Enin, Ibesikpo Asutan, Mbo, Ikono, Udung Uko, Uruan and Obot Akara local government areas.
Notable victories for the PDP included Nsit Ubium, where Atiku polled 11,308 votes, Etinan with 10,455 votes, Mkpat Enin with 9,441 votes, and Uruan where he secured 9,327 votes.
The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, won two local government areas. He recorded a major victory in Uyo, the state capital, where he polled 27,534 votes, defeating Atiku who secured 12,245 votes and APC candidate Bola Tinubu who garnered 7,769 votes. Obi also won Ibiono Ibom LGA with 7,752 votes.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, secured victories in three local government areas—Etim Ekpo, Ika and Urue-Offong/Oruko.
In Etim Ekpo, Tinubu polled 5,182 votes against Atiku’s 4,733 votes, while he also emerged victorious in Ika and Urue-Offong/Oruko with 5,511 and 3,697 votes respectively.
The results underscored the PDP’s dominance in Akwa Ibom State, with Atiku winning the majority of the declared local government areas, while Obi made significant inroads in urban centres and Tinubu secured victories in a handful of LGAs.
