The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has expressed confidence in the ongoing appeal proceedings involving its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that the Federal Government’s recent cross-appeal has bolstered the case for his release.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB said it had reviewed the Federal Government’s Notice of Cross-Appeal challenging aspects of the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025.
According to the group, the Federal Government raised issues relating to the jurisdiction of the trial court over certain aspects of the case, a development IPOB believes could have far-reaching consequences for the validity of Kanu’s conviction and sentence.
The pro-Biafra movement argued that questions of jurisdiction are fundamental in law and go to the root of judicial proceedings. It maintained that any defect in jurisdiction could render the entire process invalid and should therefore receive careful consideration by the Court of Appeal.
IPOB cited established legal authorities, including the Supreme Court decision in Madukolu v. Nkemdilim, to support its position that proceedings conducted without proper jurisdiction cannot stand.
The group urged the appellate court to thoroughly examine all issues raised in the appeals and deliver a judgment that upholds justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
Reaffirming its unwavering support for Kanu, IPOB described him as a committed advocate of the Biafran cause and maintained that legal challenges and political pressures would not weaken the resolve of those seeking self-determination.
The group further appealed to the Court of Appeal to allow Kanu’s appeal and order his release, expressing confidence that the judicial process would ultimately vindicate its leader.
Kanu remains one of the most prominent figures in Nigeria’s legal and political landscape, with developments surrounding his case continuing to attract widespread attention both within the country and internationally.
