The children of late Prof. Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), have paid glowing tribute to their mother, describing her as a courageous and passionate public servant who dedicated her life to the service of Nigerians until her final days.
In a joint statement marking the 12th anniversary of her passing, the family recalled Akunyili’s unwavering commitment to humanity, integrity, and excellence in public service.
According to them, their mother was known for her kindness, generosity, and humility, regardless of a person’s social status.
“She showed kindness and generosity to everyone, whether great or small. She served people with humility and diligence. Despite her busy schedule, she always found time to attend to those who sought her help,” the statement read.
The children noted that Akunyili made it a point to respond personally to messages and requests for assistance. They recalled that job seekers who visited her office were never turned away without support, adding that even when she could not offer employment, she often assisted them with transport fare.
They also described her as a disciplined individual who valued time and approached every responsibility with urgency and determination.
“Our mother never procrastinated. She treated every task as important and believed goals should be pursued immediately rather than postponed,” they said.
Beyond her public achievements, the family remembered her as a devoted Catholic, a loving mother, and a cheerful personality whose presence brought warmth and joy to those around her.
“She had a special nickname and song for almost everyone around her. She could instantly light up a room with her energy, laughter, and enthusiasm,” they added.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s development, the children said the country would make significant progress if more citizens and leaders embraced the values their mother stood for.
“Nigeria, like every nation, faces challenges. To build the Nigeria we all desire, we must emulate Dora’s example in our daily lives. Integrity, commitment, transparency, and accountability should guide both citizens and leaders. If we had more leaders with her values, the country would be transformed for the better,” they said.
The family said they would always remember Akunyili for her honesty, courage, and unwavering commitment to public service, noting that her achievements helped place Nigeria on the global map for positive reasons.
“We will remember our mother for her integrity, honesty, and dedication to serving Nigerians. These were the principles that defined her life, and we are proud of the legacy she left behind,” they stated.
Prof. Dora Akunyili passed away on June 7, 2014, at the age of 59 in a specialist cancer hospital in India after a two-year battle with uterine cancer. Widely celebrated for her fearless fight against counterfeit drugs and her commitment to good governance, she remains one of Nigeria’s most respected public servants.
