President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged Nigerians to actively support efforts aimed at tackling terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of all citizens.
Akpabio made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre to commemorate the 27th Democracy Day celebration.
Speaking on the theme, “Democracy, Faith and the Soul of a Nation,” the Senate President expressed concern over the continued abduction of innocent citizens, particularly children, describing the trend as troubling and one that demands sustained action from government, security agencies and local communities.
He called on Nigerians to remain vigilant, collaborate with security agencies and support measures designed to enhance safety and security nationwide.
According to him, while the government remains committed to addressing security challenges, citizens also have a critical role to play by strengthening community-based security efforts and supporting lawful initiatives targeted at curbing criminal activities.
Akpabio further stressed that democracy should go beyond periodic elections and be rooted in accountability, justice, compassion and service to the people. He noted that leadership must be regarded as a public trust, while governance should focus on improving the welfare and living conditions of citizens.
Despite the country’s current challenges, the Senate President encouraged Nigerians to remain optimistic, expressing confidence in the nation’s democratic journey and its potential for renewal and progress.
He also charged young Nigerians to participate actively in democratic processes and contribute meaningfully to national development through innovation, civic responsibility and constructive engagement in public affairs.
Akpabio offered prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, government institutions, security agencies and citizens, expressing hope for enduring peace, sustainable development and continued democratic growth in Nigeria.
The Democracy Day service attracted government officials, religious leaders and other stakeholders who gathered to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and aspirations for national development.
